When I was a graduate student at Cornell University, Bill Thurston posed the following question: "What are the possible shapes of polynomial Julia sets?" For example, is there a polynomial whose Julia sets looks like the outline of a house, or a car, or a dog? It turns out that the answer to all of these is "yes!" In joint work with M. Younsi, I characterized which shapes are approximable by polynomial Julia sets. I will discuss these results, how to create polynomial Julia sets in desired shapes, and show some images of Julia sets.
Refreshments will be served at 3:30 PM.
